More Than Just a Cat

In September 2019 we launched our exciting new campaign, More Than Just a Cat, to showcase all of the brilliant ways cats enrich our lives and bring us joy. From being best friends and members of the family, to helping combat loneliness and providing comfort during difficult times, our moggies are definitely more than just pets.

So, by giving a cat from Cats Protection a second chance at happiness in a loving new home, you’re also giving yourself a unique opportunity to enrich and enhance your own everyday experiences too.

Our centres throughout the UK are full of feline friends who are just waiting to make their mark on the lives of new owners. Until then, we will provide them with all that they need so they are happy, healthy and ready to embark on a new adventure with people just like you.

Life is better with a cat and the following inspirational tales perfectly illustrate why.

A marvellous moggy rebuilt my mental health

Eve, 35, from Romford says that a huge improvement to her mental health is down to her feline friend, Dusty, who she adopted from our Hornchurch & District Branch.

Eve has struggled with anxiety from a young age but earlier this year her condition got worse during her recovery. It was during a therapy session that Eve decided to do something for herself, so she visited our website to find the right new pet.

She soon met Dusty who, despite being quite a shy cat, she quickly built a strong rapport with. It also didn’t take long for Dusty to be at ease with Eve’s husband, Stuart. So, it was clear that the perfect new home had been found.

Eve said: “It was love at first sight with Dusty. It happened when I was at the worst of my breakdown and I feel like he came to me just in time. The rest is history.

“I’m so grateful to Cats Protection for bringing Dusty and me together. Since having him in my life, my confidence has started to come back and I absolutely believe he has played a huge part in improving my mental health. He saved me.

“Dusty is so much more than just a cat, he’s my little angel.”

Marnie & Domino

Domino was the perfect pairing for my autistic daughter

Five-year-old Marnie from King’s Lynn has autism and finds it hard to interact with other people. However, her life has been transformed by her new best friend, one-year-old black-and-white cat Domino.

Her family adopted Domino earlier this year and within a few months, Domino had already made a huge impact by helping Marnie to communicate and understand routine. Together, they have formed a very close bond.

Marnie’s mum, Nissa, said: “Marnie and Domino are best friends. Marnie talks to Domino, telling her she loves her, reading her stories and asking her to play outside.

“Marnie’s autism means she struggles to get to sleep so, at night-time, Domino comes into Marnie’s bedroom to rest and this helps Marnie understand it’s bedtime.

“I would like to thank Cats Protection for bringing this gorgeous little cat into our lives. She has helped us all so much and we couldn’t imagine our life without her.”

Definitely #MoreThanJustACat

Feline friends can help us in the most treasured ways. That is what happened when Ian Turner, 63, from Conwy in Wales adopted Spike to help with his physical and mental health.

Ian has idiopathic intracranial hypertension – a condition similar to a brain tumour which includes debilitating headaches and can sometimes leave Ian feeling suicidal.

However, through even his worst moments, Spike is there to comfort Ian with a supportive purr.

Ian said: “When I think that I can’t do this anymore, Spike seems to know and comforts me. He will climb on my shoulder to tell me that he’s here and to check that I’m OK.”

Ian and his partner Anne-Marie previously owned a ginger cat called Mr Chips, who won the Purina® Better Together category of Cats Protection’s National Cat Awards in 2014 for the support he gave Ian throughout his illness.

The couple sadly lost Mr Chips three years ago but Spike has since taken over this important role.

Ian added: “You get so much back when you open your heart to a cat. I don’t know what I’d do without Spike in my life. He’s always there when I need him to brighten my day.

“Spike is more than just a cat – he’s my motivation to keep going when times are tough.”

What we do

Our vision is a world where every cat is treated with kindness and an understanding of its needs. It’s an ambitious vision. However, we truly believe it can be achieved because of our passion, our professional approach and simply because cats are among the UK’s most popular companion pets.

Our objectives

Cats Protection has simple and clear objectives to help cats:

Homing — Finding good homes for cats in need
Neutering — Supporting and encouraging the neutering of cats
Information — Improving people’s understanding of cats and their care.
